Acne is a very common problem for both teenagers and adults and the most common perception of acne is that it occurs on the face. But, if you have suffered from acne you know that it can appear in other places too such as the chest and the back.

Although chest and back acne is not as obvious to outside observers it can be very annoying for those suffering from it. Regrettably, chest and back acne is generally harder to treat than facial acne and traditional cleaners and treatments that you purchase for the treatment of facial acne will often not work as effectively when it comes to treating back acne. And, since your chest and back are generally covered by clothing, you can experience increased irritation from the rubbing of material against your pimples.

Just as you do with your facial acne you will need to follow a daily treatment regimen for acne on your back and most common regimens include a cleanser to be followed by a moisturizer. Often, it is harder to apply medication to your back acne because of where its location and so you may require the help of a family member or to use a lotion applicator.

You must be careful about the type of clothes you wear. Tight-fitting shirts or rough material will rub against your skin and irritate your acne leading to greater oil production and thus more breakouts. You also need to be careful about the type of washing powder and fabric softener you use. Occasionally these will irritate back acne and you may need to try different brands or even a dye and fragrance free variety.

Also, watch out if you carry anything on you back. For children in school, and for those individuals who do a lot of backpacking and hiking, heavy backpacks can make back acne very much worse. If you experience an increase in the number of acne breakouts you may need to stop carrying a backpack for a while. If this is a problem then a shoulder bag can help until your spots clear up.

Your doctor or dermatologist can help you with the diagnosis and treatment of your acne and will be able to start by determining just how bad your acne is and also assessing what type of skin you have. For example, whther you skin is dry or oily or what is referred to as a combination skin is important in deciding upon the best treatment. Your doctor or dermatologist will also want to have a history of your acne condition, including such as how long you have had it and how frequently breakouts happen. With this information he will be able to work out the best treatment and medication to deal with your specific case of acne.
